The Republic of India, was one of the British colonies till the mid 20th century. On 15th August, 1947, the country officially declared its independence, and Jawaharlal Nehru was made the first Prime Minister of the new republic. The road to freedom was not easy, similar to all other colonies in the past. The struggle for independence was led by many leaders and many citizens of the subcontinent. They participated with equal spirit and gave up on their lives for the many generations to come. The freedom of British India was a moment of celebration along with disappointment to many leaders, as British India divided into two different nations, India and Pakistan. But, from then on, a new era for both the countries began.
A life of freedom that many Indians enjoy today cost millions of lives. And, a long battle that transpired for more than two centuries. The Indians' struggle to independence is a combination of two extreme ends, and the extreme ways in which human minds decipher and reflect upon situations. With different notions on how one should reach freedom and the roads to be approached, the diversity was myriad but the destination was unanimous, the ultimate victory. Few leaders, like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, felt the struggle should be peaceful, and the weapon is truth. Others believed arms need to be utilized to come out triumphant.
Finally, each with their own tactics and approach were successful. They conveyed to the oppressors that the chains they have been put upon, have also chained themselves of humanity, and they needed freedom, as much as India did. All the struggle, all the bloodshed, ended on a new beginning. A beginning that opened doors for India and its citizens to create their own identity in the world. And, from then on Indians celebrate 15th of August as the golden day of their freedom
