In this edition of the WORLD MODEL HUNT magazine, we speak to Brieana Mayne, a fashion model from Australia. She talks about her struggles, inspirations, body positivity, the obsession with size zero, the lows and highs of the industry.
Every day is a fight, just never give up, set your goals, be determined, believe in yourself, work smart, work hard and achieve them.
How does it feel like to be on the cover of a magazine?
It feels absolutely amazing almost like it’s not real, but at the same time very exciting to have my face on the cover.
Who is your style icon?
Ariana Grande. She has such a different style compared to most.
What kind of stereotypical perception do you think people have in general about your work?
When it comes to modeling, people can be very quick to judge. I think some people think models are just dumb because they are pretty or unique and just get on by their looks.
What do you feel is the best thing about your job?
Traveling and working with different photographers, stylists, makeup artists, etc. Every shoot is different and so are the people you work with. It’s so incredible to be able to create something amazing with all the great talent beside you.
One person, who inspires you the most in the modeling industry?
Kendall Jenner, she’s so great at what she does and she really does rock it.
What is your ultimate dream as a model?
For people to know who I am and to get myself out there in the world. My dream has always been to make modeling a full-time career. Not because of the fame but because it’s what I love doing it’s what makes me happy.
What is the most comfortable outfit you find that is most suited for any occasion?
High waist leather pants with a nice off-shoulder top. I find that just looks nice for any occasion whether it’s going out in the town for a night or a casual dinner with friends.
What is your idea of a perfect date?
Waterfront hotel with delicious food near the water. Another favorite is just a good movie, snack, and bed.
What is the most important quality or rather a necessity that you think one has to have as a model?
A good personality and a “can do” attitude, because you as a model will receive a lot of rejection along the way, and it’s not easy but with a good attitude towards things you can’t really go wrong. All the other stuff can be taught along the way.
What is your pre-shoot ritual?
I always try to get to know the photographer, understand the ideas he or she has. It makes me comfortable and confident about the shoot.
One piece of advice you would like to give to all the budding models out there?
If this is what you really want in life then never give up! You’ll face rejection, negativity and might be hurt. Success comes with failures on the way. Make sure failures don’t hold you down. Try not to take things to the heart, just make sure you work on the feedback. Failures are simply just opportunities to succeed.
One thing that you would like to share that you learned the hard way?
To never try and be someone you’re not. As a model we try and compare ourselves to other models and their body types, reality is we may never be that skinny or have their body shape, and that’s okay. But that is something that I learned the hard way.
Besides modeling is there something else you would want to pursue?
To travel around the world and help the underprivileged children as much as I can
What are your thoughts about the specific requirements that the industry demands of a model regarding body measurements?
I think it is wrong. Every single person in this world has a different body shape. And that doesn’t mean that they’re too fat or too skinny. It’s just their bone structure or the way their body is, though, with surgeries, people do change who they are. I also do get that every job has its own requirement and it should be respected, but there is no harm in trying for every job that’s around.
One misconception that you had regarding the fashion industry before you became a part of it?
“My weight” you can probably see from the pictures.
One thing that you have had to change about yourself?
Once again I would say “My weight”.
We all hear horrifying stories about how models need to starve to get in shape or book jobs, being a model, how important is food for you?
Food is important to me and it should be important to all models. Because we need food to survive and to be healthy. But if I was given the opportunity to starve myself to be in a top fashion show or some sort of book job. I can’t say that I would decline it either, not because it’s right. But because if that’s what it takes to make it I would do it.
Given a chance what would be the one thing that you would like to change about the industry?
The measurement requirement, just because someone is a bit bigger doesn’t mean they can’t do the job any better than someone who would weigh a little less.
What according to you is the best perk of your job?
The challenges, modeling is such a hard industry to make it big. You have to work really hard to get where you want to be. That’s why it will be so much more rewarding if you do make it big.
What is more important, the looks or confidence?
Definitely, confidence if you don’t have confidence in yourself as a person or a model then you can’t really expect anyone else to believe in you. Confidence is the most beautiful thing any woman/man can wear.
